Thyristor-based compensation
from 1 kV to 1000 kV

The RXPE SVC (Static VAR Compensator), supplied and commissioned by FORTE, is a medium and high voltage reactive power compensator. It combines thyristor-controlled reactors (TCR) with thyristor-switched capacitors (TSC) for continuous, stepless reactive power control from 1 kV to 1000 kV.

The RXPE SVC platform carries TÜV, CE-LVD, ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certification (RXPE, manufacturer).

Each system is sized for the electrical characteristics and site conditions of the installation, with SCADA integration for remote monitoring and control.

System Architecture

SVC Structure: Four Subsystems

Control system, thyristor valves, air-core reactors, capacitor banks and filters.

A) Digital Control System

Fully programmable digital control cabinet. It calculates the real-time reactive power demand and sets the thyristor firing angles. Functions include reactive power control, single phase adjusting, self-diagnosis, real-time monitoring and communication. Response time ≤ 10 ms. Indoor installed.

B) Thyristor Valves

TCR / TSC valves in shelf structure for easy thyristor replacement. Both ETT (Electric Triggered) and LTT (Light Triggered) thyristors available. Heat pipe natural cooling or water cooling. Generates corresponding reactive compensation currents by adjusting thyristor triggering angle. Indoor installed.

C) Air-Core Reactors

Twin winding (TCR) air-core reactors with natural cooling. Inductive reactive power is generated by controlling the current through the thyristor-switched reactor. This balances the system reactive power and stabilizes busbar voltage and power factor. Outdoor installed.

D) Capacitor Banks & Harmonic Filters

Used in harmonic filter branches, mechanically switched capacitor banks or TSC banks. Capacitor banks are often combined with damping/tuning reactors or resistors (high pass channels). Air-core reactor, double winding, natural cooling. Outdoor installed.

Thyristor Technology

Thyristor Valves: ETT/LTT, Heat Pipe or Water Cooling

Valve construction and the two cooling methods.

SCR Series Converting

Based on large power SCR (thyristor) series converting technology. Single phase anti-parallel SCR series configuration. Thyristor valves can connect directly to 1 kV ~ 69 kV systems, or to 110 kV ~ 1000 kV via transformers.

ETT & LTT Thyristors

Both Electric Triggered Thyristors (ETT) and Light Triggered Thyristors (LTT) are available. LTT uses optical fibre for high-voltage isolation, so the trigger signal is immune to electromagnetic interference.

Heat Pipe Cooling

Patented bi-directional, totally enclosed heat pipes absorb heat directly from the thyristors. Natural cooling with no pumps, no fans and no moving parts. Maintenance-free and noise-free.

Water Cooling (Optional)

Water cooling for larger thyristor valves. Two external cooling methods: water/water with an existing external water loop, or water/air with additional cooling fans.

Shelf Structure Design

Standard shelf structure allows fast thyristor replacement during maintenance. Redundant SCRs are included for the 30-year service life.

Key Features

SVC Performance: Stepless Output, Flicker and Voltage Control

What the TCR + TSC combination does at the busbar.

TCR + TSC Topology

Continuously variable TCR control combined with discrete TSC switching gives a stepless reactive power output across the full operating range.

Flicker Compensation

Flicker mitigation for arc furnace loads. Voltage fluctuation is reduced below the IEC 61000-3-7 limits.

Voltage Regulation

Busbar voltage is held within ±1% of setpoint under dynamic load. Applies to arc furnace plants and industrial substations with variable loads.

Remote Monitoring & SCADA

Optional remote monitoring sends real-time operating data off site. SCADA integration via IEC 61850, Modbus TCP/RTU and DNP3.

Applications

Applications: Arc Furnaces, Traction, Transmission Lines

Fast-changing MV loads and long HV lines.

Electric Arc Furnaces

The primary application for SVC. Flicker mitigation and voltage control for EAF steelmaking operations.

Rolling Mills

Large motor drives with rapid load cycling creating severe reactive power demand fluctuations at MV level.

Electric Railway / Subway

Single-phase traction power compensation, three-phase unbalance correction and power factor improvement for railway substations.

Long Distance Transmission

Voltage stabilization, transmission loss reduction and transient stability improvement for long-distance HV power lines.

Ice Melting

High DC current-based ice melting for overhead transmission lines. SVC-based rectification melts ice and snow in cold climate regions.
